About our Class:

During the second trimester of second grade we build on the skills from the first trimester.  Many new concepts are introduced to continue to expand the students’ knowledge.

--In Religion the seasons of Advent, Christmas, and the return to ordinary time is explored.  We begin our work on the parts of the Mass which is the beginning of our First Communion curriculum.

--In the student’s writing we encourage more descriptive work using adjectives and exact verbs. Paragraph form with a main idea sentence, detail sentences and a closing sentence is the expectation.

--In Math the students work on regrouping with two and three digit numbers.  Knowing their basic math facts is now expected.  Other concepts that are worked on are money, time, fractions, geometry, and graphing.  We continue the work on how to interpret story problems so they can decide which operation to use and whether it is a one or two step process.

--For Spelling we will continue to work on the phonetic patterns each week, with the extra spelling words coming from the learned concepts of the week.  This encourages the children to always be aware and to pay attention to any words written on the chalkboard or used in their texts.

--Our stories in reading will continue to excite the children with fiction and non-fiction that helps them learn the different story elements.  It will also help them to develop their creativity as we work on plays, presentations, and projects over the next two trimesters.

--We will finish our work on Social Studies with a unit on geography and then move into the Farm Unit which melds the ideas of Social Studies with the concepts of science. The students will work in cooperative groups to research farming and then to build a farm using what they have learned.  These will be on display during the Catholic Schools Week Open House at the end of January. Science gets into full swing after this introduction.

A major thing begins in January.  We start cursive the day we get back!  We know the students are looking forward to this...and so the journey continues.
